Homemade Christmas Gifts From Children are the Best

Homemade Ornaments

The best Christmas gifts I ever received were the ornaments my children made for our tree.

My children are all grown with families of their own and when I pull out the homemade ornament box they all have special meaning to me.

Sometimes I just sit on the floor and go back in time remembering how hectic it was when decorating the tree with the three of them but it was so much fun. I look at the photo ornaments and the dates on the back of them and ask myself where did the time go. It seems like just yesterday, and now they have families of their own. There is a song by Kenny Chesney “Don’t Blink,” and it is exactly how I feel about my children. I blinked and they are adults and have children of their own.

When my children were in school

Every year the childrens teachers would help them make an ornament for the tree. I really cannot say I have a favorite. I just love them all. Each one has a special meaning to me because my children made them. I would say 75% of the ornaments on my tree are homemade and the others are gifts from my husband and children.

Family and visitors comment on the ornaments and how special they must be.

Every year when taking the tree down I take special care of these ornaments. I have a box for them. I make sure each one is wrapped in tissue paper and placed neatly in the box till next year.

Some of the ornaments my Children Made

A plexiglas Christmas frame, shaped as a tree with a picture of my daughter in the 4th grade.

A picture of my son in kindergarten framed with sparkling ice pop sticks.

A picture of my son in nursery school in a heart frame made out of pipe cleaners, and a beautiful ribbon attached. On one side of the ribbon is written his name and the other side the year.

A silver bell made out of a paper cup wrapped in tin foil with a red piece of yarn for the hanger on the tree.

These are just a few of the ornaments my children had made and I still use them on my tree year after year. They hold such special meaning for me.

Keep tradition going

Each year I try and make an ornament for my kids tree.  One of the gifts I made is a sea shell covered in the sparkling glitter. I always put the year I made it and hope like myself they will cherish it for many years. I also like to do the plexiglas ornaments with the pictures of the kids you look at these and see how they have grown from year to year.

Now I am beginning to see my grandchildren giving me a special ornament at Christmas time so the tradition continues.

You are right on...those simple little gifts become treasures...and the memories they bring each season become more special as it 'widens the family circle'. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

Thanks for this Hub...I know how you feel...my daughter is now 24, single with no children. I found her paper made Christmas stocking with the white cotton balls around the edge for white fur trim. Primitive but Precious. I, too, blinked and those special times, not gone, but certainly transformed by maturity. Ooooh how I am waiting for the grands. I will make Christmas gifts and ornaments with them! Merry Christmas, Joaniemb!
